The Elven Halcyon lightsaber is inspired by the High Elven warrior sword that appears in the opening battle sequence of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, along with an incorporated Star Wars aesthetic and Halcyon Starcruiser logo. For this creation, material choices were important. Some materials needed to fit the sci-fi aesthetic approach of Star Wars, while others needed to remain faithful to the historic and organic material choices of the original Lord of the Rings props. For the metal on the lightsaber, aircraft-grade aluminum and free-machining brass was the clear choice for anything requiring strength. For the aesthetic details, only the elegance silver and solid gold would suffice. For strength, 10kt gold and sterling silver was chosen. Although no information is available on the wood choice for the High Elven Warrior Sword, cocobolo wood was chosen for this lightsaber as it is the same wood used for the original Elven “Sting” sword.
The emitter is constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum, the details on which are quite fine, and could only be cut by hand. Using the smallest available jeweller saw to cut the shapes, and precision watchmaker’s files to refine the shapes, the Halcyon logo and organic elven shapes were formed. The emitter shroud was friction-fit onto a hand-turned piece of cocobolo wood. The upper and lower grips were turned from the same aircraft-grade aluminum, then wrapped in soft, olive-green lambskin leather. The middle grip was crafted from the same piece of cocobolo wood, and then wrapped in gold and silver. The sterling silver leaf pattern was designed to mirror the leaf pattern on the High Elven Warrior Sword. The wrap was cut by hand with a jeweller saw, shaped with precision files, and set with specialty adhesive. For added measure, 16 solid 10kt gold rivets were carefully turned and polished on a vintage watchmaker’s lathe, and then hammered into the wood through the silver wrap. The pommel was turned from the same aircraft-grade aluminum as the emitter and grips, with its unique shape achieved by utilizing precise and difficult eccentric turning methods. To appear as though this lightsaber was found in a cave or burrow, much like Sting or Glamdring, an aesthic chemical patina was applied to the entire hilt and chamber.
The crystal chamber features mirrored ends constructed of 36 individual parts per side. Accenting the chamber are brass rods shaped organically to appear as vines or branches, with further accents handcrafted from sterling silver and shaped to mimic the leaf pattern found on “sting”, then set with 10kt gold hand-turned rivets. Inside the chamber are yellow and orange quartz crystals. Holding the chambers in place are steel micro-screws which have been polished and heat stained to a purple-blue hue. Controlling the electronics inside are two buttons capped with sterling silver covers, inlaid with a press-fit 10kt gold centre. Above the switches is a USB-C port for charging and data access. Above that is a handcrafted sterling silver kill-switch.
Inside the crystal chamber is a Proffieboard v3.9, and a dual-battery setup consisting of one 18650 and one 18500 class battery. For the best sound, a Smuggler’s Outpost 28mm “dark side” bass speaker was chosen. For the brightest blade, a SCW NPXL V3 blade connector is set in the top and accented with a custom holder and green enamel painted details. For display, a vintage box, made in England, was restored and customized specifically for this lightsaber, complete with a custom brass display plaque affixed. To complete the project, a one-of-a-kind custom elven sound font was created by The Proplicator for this lightsaber.
